Visa and Mastercards

Can I make a purchase in shops overseas (that accepts MasterCard) with my Commonwealth Bank Debit MasterCard?

In addition: Do you reckon that I get a Commonwealth Bank Debit MasterCard? Or would you prefer Visa Debit Cards? I am currently in Australia and will be traveling to Malaysia soon. I wish to do some shopping in Malaysia by card, to keep my pocket light. In addition: Do you reckon that I get a Commonwealth Bank Debit MasterCard? Or would you prefer Visa Debit Cards?

1. Are you in Australia? I'm in the US, and here, anyone who accepts Visa, also accepts MasterCard, and vice versa. Also, all MasterCards are treated the same worldwide, regardless of whether they are debit or credit. I highly assume it is the same situation in Australia, if you are in Australia. By the way, make sure that your card is indeed a MasterCard, not a Maestro card. Maestro card acceptance is not as big as MasterCard. If it is Maestro, you should have not problem using it in Western Europe, as well as at places that accept PIN-enabled debit cards in the US and Canada. Check with your bank before leaving to make sure your PIN number works worldwide.
2. just adding to john's answer, if you have a 6 digit pin number which you use in australia, it will not work overseas only the first 4 digits, you can get a brochure from CBA or speak to a customer service officer in person or call 132221.
3. Adding to the other answers already - call 132221 (open 7am till midnight 7 days & 24 hours for lost cards) & get let them know your travel dates to be recorded on your Debit Mastercard. Malaysia is a high risk region & it's a good idea to let them know so they're not suprised if foreign transactions pop up. Also never rely on one method to access your account, alway carry another card and some foreign currency & if in doubt call CBA reverse charges from overseas on + 61 299993283 Not a huge difference between Visa & Mastercard, they're just brand names & you'll find they're both pretty much accepted in the same places Have a great trip!
